Early sex manuals, as well as being instructive, are
often, also, great works of literature. They include
from the classical world, the lost works of Elephantis
and Ovid's Ars Amatoria. The Indian Kama Sutra is one of
the world's best known works of this type. The Ananga
Ranga, a 12th-century collection of Indian erotic works,
is a lesser known one. Also very famous, and often
reprinted and translated, is The Perfumed Garden for the
Soul's Recreation, a 16th century Arabic work by Sheikh
Nefzaoui.
